An alternator is a generator that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. When you start your car, the alternator generates power for the vehicle’s electronics and other components. Without an alternator, none of these components will function.
How Does The Alternator Work?
The process by which an alternator works can be broken down into three steps: first, the belt connecting the engine and crankshaft spins a rotor inside of an electromagnet; then, a current is generated through copper coils; finally, this current is sent out through two or more wires and used as power for various devices in your car. In short, when you turn on your car’s ignition switch, the belt spins the rotor that creates electricity which then powers all of your car’s components, like its headlights and stereo system.
