Engine Sounds That Are Signs of Trouble

The only thing you want to hear when your engine is running is smooth operation. If you start to hear strange sounds, drive straight to our shop so we can determine what is wrong. The engine will make strange noises if it is not running efficiently. There are other parts of your automobile that can also make strange noises if they are having problems. Let’s talk more about this below.

Growling

For example, the engine will growl and grind if it does not have enough motor oil circulating through it. The water pump will growl if it is going bad. The alternator will also growl if it is going bad. We can determine from where the growling sounds are coming and then fix the problem.

Hissing

There are also a couple of reasons why your engine will make hissing noises. If you’ve got leaking fluid that is dripping out of one part of the engine and landing on another part, the fluid will hiss or sizzle due to the heat of the engine. Leaking vacuum hoses also hiss.

Knocking

Knocking in the cylinders is a detonation problem. This can be caused by the wrong fuel, worn spark plugs, or an air-heavy fuel mixture. The pistons may also knock against the cylinder walls if the rod bearings are worn out. This can also break a rod.

Roaring

You most likely have an exhaust system problem if the engine is roaring. One of the things that can make the engine roar loudly is a missing catalytic converter. Another thing that will make the engine roar loudly is a muffler that needs to be replaced.

Squealing

Squealing sounds can come from the engine or the brakes. If the engine is squealing, the serpentine belt most likely needs to be tightened. The power steering system can also squeal if the pump is going bad. If your brake system is squealing, it may be overheating.

Tapping

Finally, the exhaust system will tap or pop if the exhaust manifold is leaking or the catalytic converter is clogged. You may also hear tapping noises if the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking. This can release exhaust into the engine and overheat it.
